About Sander Hupkes

As an artist based in Apeldoorn, I have been inspired by art and culture since I was young. My artistic journey as a painter began in 2012 when I met artist and now good friend Frans Polman. For several years I shared a studio with Frans, where he worked as an artist and I as a graphic designer. During this period I discovered my true passion: painting. 

Another great passion of mine is traveling. During my travels I find inspiration in the peace, colors and textures of different landscapes and seascapes. I translate these experiences into my work, where I strive to capture the colors, the natural rhythm and the peace of nature in my paintings.

Artist Statement

In a world that moves fast, my art inspires you to slow down. To pause, to truly look and to see beyond the surface. I create for those who want to escape the daily rush, to reconnect with their surroundings and to experience the deeper layers of what’s around them. 

Nature is my greatest inspiration. Its raw textures, shifting colors, and ever-changing light. The shimmer of the sun through the trees, the multiple colors on the water surface at sunset or the weathered painted layers of a concrete wall. Nothing is ever just one color, one shape or one texture. When you look closer, you see more.

I work with acrylics and natural materials like sand from beaches and ash to bring depth and tangibility to my paintings. My process is intuitive, layering textures and pigments to create abstract works that feel both raw and refined. Every piece is an invitation to observe with an artist’s eye to discover the beauty in the details, the richness in imperfection and the endless depth of color and form.
