An unforgettable milestone: my first international art sale
This past weekend was unforgettable. For the first time in my career as an artist, one of my works crossed the Dutch border to find a new home abroad. Deep Horizon, one of my raw, abstract paintings, was acquired by two passionate art lovers and collectors in Düsseldorf, Germany.
On Saturday, May 31st, my partner Judith and I drove to Düsseldorf to personally deliver the artwork. After carefully wrapping Deep Horizon in over 20 meters of bubble wrap, we arrived at the collectors’ beautiful home. They had planned something truly special: a private Dinner & Art Reveal evening with close friends, amazing food and of course, the unveiling of the painting.
A warm welcome in Düsseldorf
For the big moment we checked in at 25hours Hotel in Düsseldorf, which is highly recommended if you are visiting the city! We spent the afternoon exploring some local art galleries, including Galerie van Horn, where I had the chance to share my new artist brochure and introduce my work to some curious gallery employees.
Later that day we returned to the collectors house. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Friends arrived and the table was filled with delicious Asian fusion dishes prepared by the hosts.
The reveal of Deep Horizon
After dinner, the moment had come. Together, Adriaan and Zion carefully unwrapped the 20 meters of bubble wrap surrounding Deep Horizon. As an artist, that moment is always a mix of pride and nerves. Will they still love it? Did it survive the trip unharmed?
The reaction was beautiful. Smiles, positive energy, and enthusiastic comments filled the room. Adriaan and Zion were genuinely touched, and their guests were equally impressed. It was a moment I won’t forget.
Sharing stories, connecting through art
I had the chance to speak about the story behind Deep Horizon and share more about my work and process. The guests were truly engaged and curious, which made the experience even more rewarding.
The evening ended with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Calm, beautiful and meaningful. A perfect way to close a night full of connection, creativity and appreciation.
Thank you
To Adriaan and Zion: thank you for your warmth, hospitality, and for giving Deep Horizon a place in your home. I look forward to seeing it on your wall.
