Raw Earth Paper 253

Raw Earth Paper 253 (RA-P_253) is an intimate abstract painting created on handmade paper from the historic mill De Middelste Molen near Apeldoorn. Drawn to raw and tactile materials, I was immediately captivated by the irregular texture and soul of this paper. Each sheet carries its own quiet story, with rough edges, visible fibers, and natural imperfections that flow seamlessly into the work itself. 

This small piece (18 × 13.5 cm) is inspired by the earthy tones and vivid contrasts of the Mallorcan landscape, from the warmth of the soil to the clear blue of the sea. Within its layered surface lies real sand collected from the island’s beaches, combined with mixed media materials that bring depth and texture to the work. A quiet reflection of place, material, and memory.

It marks one of my first explorations beyond canvas, a step toward smaller, more intimate works that reveal the essence of touch, material, and process. Raw. Honest. Personal.

This work is also on view at the group exhibition at Gigalerie celebrating 50 years of Gigant in Apeldoorn.
